A fair-minded explanation of the political divide

This short, readable book does (in my opinion) a good job at a difficult task; trying to explain what conservatives and liberals in America believe, and why they believe it, without showing bias toward one side and denigrating the other side. Personally, I'm a libertarian with some ties to the conservative viewpoint, and I'm used to seeing conservatism and libertarianism vilified by presumed experts operating from the view that liberalism is the "normal" or "true" viewpoint. This book does not do that. On the other hand, I think it gives a fair shake to the liberal viewpoint as well. No viewpoint is presented here as being either fundamentally evil (as many liberals and some conservatives believe about the opposing views) or fundamentally foolish or irrational (as conservatives often believe about liberals).
I don't necessarily agree with everything in the book-- for example, in the section dealing with libertarianism as an alternative to both major ideologies, I'm not thrilled with the author's use of the terms "strong-willed" and "weak-willed" to describe what I would call the difference between radical and moderate libertarians (maybe because I'm among the supposedly "weak-willed"). But in general I'm impressed with the author's fairness and knowledge of the subject. In fact I'm not sure after reading the book if the author is personally a liberal, a conservative, or neither... and that's about as good a sign of non-bias as one could hope for.
